Welcome to the 50s!

It's hard to think about the 1950s without thinking about soda shops. Soda floats were the staple of these old-school ice cream shops! These vanilla or chocolate cherry ice cream floats, made with your choice of ice cream, grenadine, and 7-Up are the perfect sock hop party treat! Find the full recipe at Your Home Based Mom!
Of course, no sock hop is complete without dancing, so play some 50s music and bust a move like Sandy and Danny at the Rydell High School dance! Show the dance-off clip from Grease for inspiration!

A Dino-mite Party!

Choosing a party theme isn't always easy! As my kids have grown, I've come to realize that I get less and less say in things. First, it was with their Halloween costumes, and then their clothes, so I know my days of adorable birthday parties will soon be gone! After months of discussion, my son decided he wanted either a Lego party or a dinosaur one! He tried to convince me to merge the two themes but I held firm that it couldn't be done. At last, we had a theme. . .dinosaurs!
The next step after finally deciding on a theme: sending the invitations! This is likely our last "just family" party, so I went for quick and easy online invites, sending them via e-mail and Facebook! You can download the background here, then just add text!
Now, it was time to decide on the cake. I do not cook. Well, I cook sometimes, but only because my family insists on eating all of the time, it's not my strong suit! So, my initial plan was a bakery cake, but my six year old and I couldn't find one we agreed on. My next plan was to order cupcakes and put toppers on those (you all know how I love my toppers)! Then, I came across this little gem from Sprinkle Bakes!
I actually already had the sand molds, so that part was easy! The only problem is that my son, Hudson, prefers vanilla over chocolate, so we decided our dinosaur skeleton would be found in sand instead of dirt! Here's our adjusted recipe:
2 boxes of cake mix (white, prepared per package instructions)
2.5 tubs of prepared vanilla frosting
1 package golden Oreos, finely crushed in the food processors
1.5 lbs white chocolate
Quick and dirty instructions:
1. Mix, bake, cool, and frost the cake (frost all the way to the edges, you don't want to lose any sand!)
2. Melt the chocolate (slow and steadily, don't ask how I know this). Put in the molds and freeze
3. Crush the cookies, spread most of the "sand" around, and place the dinosaur mold on top, then sprinkle with a little extra sand.
I made the cake the day before and covered it tightly with plastic wrap and foil. It spent the night on the counter and was delicious for the party (and a few days beyond)!
So that leaves the menu, everything was dinosaur-style, of course! We had Pterodactyl wings (chicken wings), Brontosaurus burgers, omnivorous pasta salad, Stegosaurus spikes (watermelon wedges), Dino bones (regular and white chocolate covered pretzels), Dinosaur Claws (Cheetos and Fritos), and Herbivore Haven (a veggie tray)!
I also created some Dino-themed freebies! Pictured below is the Dinosaur Maze, but there are also dinosaur coloring pages and a dot to dot! Image credits to Little Red's Clip Art
The party was a great success, everyone had a dino-mite time!

Forest, Friends, and Fun!

These chocolate peanut butter acorns are an awesome, creative, and tasty snack, perfect for a forest friends party! All you need are mini-Nutter Butters, Hershey's Kisses, and mini-chocolate chips! You can either put a bowl of these out at the party, or put them in individual baggies as a party favor! Check out Honey and Butter for full instructions!

These DIY animal track stamps are a great way to keep the kids entertained! Make the stamps ahead of time and then give each party a guest a large sheet of paper and some paint! Then, have the kids label the animal that corresponds with each set of tracks! A quick Google search will bring up all sorts of animal tracks you can re-create! For more information, check out Green Kid Crafts!

Another fun animal-related activity is making paper plate raccoons! There are tutorials for all sorts of animals, but I thought these raccoons were too cute! All you need are paper plates, gray tissue paper, black and white yardstick, glue, scissors, a stapler, and some fun punches. Parents can help the kids with the more difficult parts like cutting and stapling! Check out Glued to my Crafts for step-by-step instructions!

Cute as a Bug!

Cute as a Bug!

We mentioned earlier this week that the weather had us "bugging" out.   Well, besides the adorable decor, there are so many bee-yond cute food ideas to incorporate with a "Bug Party!"

Of course you'll have your cake, and eat it too, but here are some cute snacks to have on hand during your party.

This theme may be one of my favorites just because the food ideas.   You can be healthy AND happy with this option.

Caterpillars or butterflies anyone?   Just grab some celery,pb (which is enough for me!), add pretzels or apples you've got a hit!   For the full recipe, just click here.

Well, not ALL party food can be healthy.  We have some serious love for our multipurpose items (like pretzels for instance) so this snack idea is uber cute and reuses those pretzels!  The recipe calls for Mounds bars but any snack size candy bar would work.   For the full recipe, click here.

No party is complete without some "Bug Juice" right?   Well, this recipe is the bee's knees when it comes to juice and it's super easy.

For more party ideas, check out our Pinterest board!
